Recently I had the privilege of meeting HRH Prince Edward after performing for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Diamond Anniversary celebrations at the Wales Millennium Centre. This was a fantastic evening where I was in the midst of some rather high profile people including international rugby player Alun Wyn Jones, BBC Radio Wales presenter Eleri Siôn, and several chief executives from some of the UK’s most leading companies.
During the evening we performed three songs for the VIP guests, including OBA’s signature piece, Calon Lân. We then carried out a musical workshop lead by our Musical Director Tim Rhys Evans, where ourselves as members supported the likes of Alun Wyn Jones in tackling some of the vocal challenges from the workshop. The workshop really was a lot of fun and saw a room full of over forty VIP’s engage and enthuse with a variety of vocal warm ups. From anthems to Zulu inspired lyrics, the workshop was varied and unique, and provided the final product of an eight part Zulu inspired song that was performed for the Prince.
After performing the end product of this workshop, which I must say, was to the Prince’s delight, His Royal Highness greeted and thanked us as members of Only Boys Aloud for our performance. I was fortunate enough to speak to the Prince who was keen to know if such workshops were a regular showcasing for OBA!
